TYO - EMERGING LEADERS WEBINAR (MARCH 12) IS A HUGE SUCCESS

On March 12, 2019, Transforming Youth Outdoors (TYO) hosted a webinar featuring three organizations that manage emerging leaders programs---Fresh Tracks, American Hiking Society's NextGen Trail Leaders, and AORE's Emerging Leaders Program. Each of these initiatives focus on developing leaders who aim to make a positive impact for nature and the outdoors. A recording of the webinar is available to watch on AORE's Emerging Leaders Program page as well as in our newly launched members learning portal.

Our Executive Director represented AORE for this learning session, engaging in a lively exchange with Juan Martinez, Co-Founder of Fresh Tracks, and Tyler Ray, Director of Policy and Advocacy for the American Hiking Society. Here, Jeannette describes her experiences of partnering on this event:

Participating in the TYO Emerging Leader's Program workshop allowed me to better hear what other organizations are doing to incorporate, advance, and empower leadership in our outdoor community. Juan Martinez continues to engage at every level of the community and with diverse populations in a meaningful and transcendent way. Tyler Ray and the work of the American Hiking Society allows emerging leaders to participate in DC as well as experience a wide variety of opportunities for storytelling and engagement. I was proud to share information about the year-long mentor-mentee matching services that AORE's own emerging leaders program provides. I also showcased how important it is for members and conference attendees to hear about the work of tremendous leaders who operate outside of AORE member programs. These interactions support career advancement, often leading to myriad leadership opportunities down the road. There are many emerging leader programs in this industry, and I would strongly encourage members and non-members alike to take a leap of faith and apply, invest in themselves, and participate. It truly is a transformational experience.

Emerging leaders programs provide opportunities for diverse groups of young people, oftentimes early career professionals, to receive focused training opportunities as well as ongoing support to develop their leadership skills. The goal is for leaders to return home and work toward change in their communities and within their organizations, businesses, or schools, oftentimes to increase access to outdoor spaces, promote the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and help nurture other potential leaders.
