GLOBAL UNIVERSITY 2019: MEET GENEVIEVE MARCHAND

Geneviève Marchand
Assistant Professor
Humboldt State University
AORE Member (10 years)

What strengths do you bring to your work? How do you think these traits will touch down during the trip?
I see the big picture as well as the small details. I am perceptive and intuitive. I am driven and like to push others to challenge themselves positively. I love to laugh and like to have a good time with people around me.

What are you most looking forward to on the trip?
All of the education sessions and outdoor activities look great. While I have been to Costa Rica once, I did not get the chance to visit Tortuguero National Park. So that is something that will be a highlight!

In terms of professional development, what aspect of the trip are you most looking forward to and why?
I’m eager to meet a group of women who share similar goals and learn alongside them. I’m looking forward to hearing their perspectives and hope to be challenged by them to think outside the box when it comes to my work.

Why did you apply for Global University this year?
I was curious about the idea of traveling with a group of women who are interested in similar topics and who want to keep developing their expertise in order to make an impact in the field. I’m also exploring the possibility of taking students on a future trip so I want to learn what’s available out there in terms of planning a unique experience.

Why are outdoor learning activities, recreation experiences, and adventure-based education opportunities important and impactful to personal growth and development?
The outdoors create a natural setting that challenges humans to learn and grow. It reaches the heart, mind and physical aspect of human beings, creating a rounded form of development and growth.

Describe how you first fell in love with nature. Why do you still love the wilderness today?
I don't think I "fell" in love with nature, simply because it was a part of my life from early on. My parents would put me in my bassinet outdoors to sleep (even in winter!). I spent my days playing outside as I grew up. It felt natural.
